E-mails between Bill Peavy and Tom Browder ========================================== from: W L (Bill) Peavy to: Tom Browder date: Wed, Nov 28, 2012 at 9:36 PM subject: Research Tom, I've just found a copy of Attachment 1 to SO 345, TAFCW, USAFA, Colo, 16 May 1962. It's titled "ROSTER OF CADETS -- CLASS OF 1965". I'm working to OCR it right now and when I have it, I'll send you a PDF. Best, -Bill ========================================== from: W L (Bill) Peavy to: Tom Browder date: Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 11:49 AM subject: RE: Research Hi Tom: I'm attaching the raw scan of the document I wrote you about as well as an Excel spreadsheet (.xls) with the results of the OCR. I need to point out several issues with the original: a) It appears that it may have been incorrectly assembled in the head shed. Three sheets are duplicates. b) There are a few of my own pen-and-ink "corrections" on one or more of the pages. I had added John Judd and had marked out a few people who apparently left the Academy (like Gerald Kirby). (I managed to recover the names marked out by zooming in on the spot.) That said, I've checked and double-checked the original scans against the OCR results, correcting OCR errors as found. In other words, I think the text is reliable. c) The head-count is way too low. After the "corrections" above, there are only 315 classmates listed in the Special Order. d) There are occasional mis-spellings or changes in initials. See "RONALD F OTT" which Polaris '62 has as "OTT, R. W." I strongly suspect this is the same guy and he's one of our "Unknown CS Affiliation" classmates that we can now assign to CS-21 if you're agreeable. (See "f" below) e) Note that Cadet Serial Numbers, Squadron Assignments, and P.O. Boxes are shown in the Order. f) I think we can resolve as many as six (6) classmates currently on our Unknown CS Affiliations page: 1) "ALAN R GRIFFITH" CS-18 seems very likely to be the "Griffith, A.R." in Polaris '62; 2) "RONALD F OTT" CS-21 seems very likely to be the "OTT, R. W." in Polaris '62 ; 3) "LUTHER C SHELTON" CS-14 seems very likely to be the "Shelton, L.C." in Polaris '62; 4) "ALEXANDER M STANTON JR" CS-18 seems very likely to be the "Stanton, A.M." in Polaris '62; 5) "JAMES A VALLENDER" CS-18 seems very likely to be the "Vallender, J.A." in Polaris '62; 6) "BENJAMIN F WARLICK JR" CS-14 seems very likely to be the "Warlick, B. F." in Polaris '62; I think that this Attachment to Special Order 345 must have been a roster of those Cadets assigned to one of the two Z-I Field Trips in 1962. You'll note that the date on the footing line is 16 May 1962, which is about the time that these rosters would have been compiled and distributed to the squadrons. Also, there is only one Cadet listed from any squadron below 13 and that is JAMES D MEIGGS from CS-12. I'm betting that there's either another Attachment floating around (#2?) that lists the CS-01 thru CS-12 guys for the other Z-I Field Trip, or they're carried in a different Special Order (344?). Remember, they split us up into two big groups for that trip and we hit the various installations at different times, probably to avoid over-crowding on the designated bases. One other thing that occurs to me is that whoever you have researching the archives should be able to locate the entire Special Order 345 of 16 May 1962 and come up with a better list of those guys who lasted until then, including their Spring '62 CS assignments. Either that or the companion Special Order (344?) for CS-01 thru CS-12. If my guesses about Unknown CS Affiliations (see "f" above) are correct, then we have homes for six (6) more classmates. I think that's about all I can do with this now Tom. All the best to you and Missy. ========================================== from: W L (Bill) Peavy to: Tom Browder date: Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 5:35 PM subject: RE: Research Tom, I should have explained about the PDF file containing the scan of the original document. The pages in the PDF file are ordered like this: Page 1: front of sheet 1, Page 2: back of sheet 1, Page 3: front of sheet 2, Page 4: back of sheet 2, and so on for all seven sheets. My scanner has an ADF so I told it to scan two-sided originals. It scans the front side of a sheet, then flips it internally and scans the reverse side. I just removed the staple holding all this stuff together and put the stack in the ADF. It looks crazy when it's happening but it works out exactly right in the end. I left the duplicate sheets in-place (I didn't realize there WERE dupes at first) and so the PDF looks really bizarre at first. I just didn't want you thinking I'd been dropping "acid" or anything like that. Best to you and Missy, -Bill ========================================== from: Tom Browder to: "W L (Bill) Peavy" date: Sat, Dec 1, 2012 at 2:15 PM subject: Re: Research Great work, Bill. I'll try to sort it out later. I'm sure this can help our researcher [Dennis Murphy]--I need to check on him anyway. Best, -Tom ========================================== from: W L (Bill) Peavy to: Tom Browder date: Sat, Dec 1, 2012 at 3:10 PM subject: RE: Research Thanks Tom. Kind words indeed! I'm doing some guessing here since I don't KNOW how the paperwork would be done but it seems to me that there might have been two movement OP-Orders for the Z-I Field Trips since there were two different routes and schedules. They may have included the relevant Special Orders containing the Class Trip Rosters by reference. It seems reasonable to me but then, I've never actually seen examples of such orders. But I'm thinking there were two separate Special Orders of which 345 was one. I'm thinking that the other one contained the Roster for the OTHER Z-I Field Trip. I'm really excited about this though because It seems we could pick up several of our Un-Affiliated classmates by having a close look at the rosters. If another of these attachments turns up, forward it to me and I'll OCR it and try to extract the same kind of information I got from this one. All the best, -Bill
